Scot
Cousin was born and raised in Texas where he started drawing
cartoon caricatures on the kitchen table at the tender age
of two. More into music than art at that age, Scot pursued
percussion and the saxophone for the next ten years. While
music was a big part of Scot's life, he took his first art
class when he was a freshman in high school. From then on,
he was hooked on using the right side of his brain. It was
"as if I discovered the effects of coffee for the first
time!" He drew, painted and sculpted his way through
the years until he graduated in 1981 at CY-Fair High School
in Cypress, Texas. Scot was then accepted at McNeese State
University under a music scholarship, where he studied Liberal
Arts.
After
college, traveling around the United States living in Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas and Georgia, Scot realized that
although he was very successful, his happiness was not to
be found in the Corporate America. During his corporate journey
however, he fell in love - with ceramic tile! "Not just
laying square tiles in a room, but the texture, the limitless
creative potential with something so natural, knowing that
everything you create is original! Mosaic creation is what
I craved most about working with this newly discovered medium.
It is an exciting medium. I try to capture simplicity and
the mood I am feeling at that moment. Every piece fills me
with so much joy. It's great to do what you really love!"
Scot's
creations are made using two techniques: controlled and uncontrolled
mosaic formation. Controlled mosaic formation is simply cutting
the pieces to the exact size and shape that you want. Uncontrolled
mosaic formation is literally breaking the pieces apart with
a hammer and creating artwork inspired by the unique shapes
of those pieces. Scot uses a variety of colors and shapes
in his work, creating one of a kind mirrors, bowls, and candle
holders. Scot can also custom design items for your home such
as unique mosaic fireplaces, and any flooring whether it be
inside or out.
